The company was founded in 1957 by Henry Kloss, Malcolm S. Low and Josef Anton Hofmann as KLH Research and Development Corporation (Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States) to manufacture loudspeakers.

Once the world's largest speaker manufacturer, it supplies more than 30,000 speakers annually to retailers and distributors on six continents.
KLH is deeply rooted in high-fidelity sound reproduction as a pioneering company:
They were among the first to introduce the first high-selectivity FM radio, the Model Eight, the first fully electrostatic loudspeaker, the Model Nine, voted "one of the twelve best speakers ever built" by Stereophile magazine, and the first portable transistor turntable, Model Eleven.
They introduced the consumer product market to Ray Dolby (Dolby Laboratories) with Model Fourty, the first tape recorder with Dolby noise reduction.
Several of KLH's loudspeakers have become among the best-selling models in the world. The most notable of these are the Model Five, Model Six and Model Seventeen, for which the acoustic suspension speaker design was developed by Edgar Villchur and founder Henry Kloss.
